Ludwig Kappos, MD, Dipl.-Psych., FEAN, FAAN, is the CEO of the Research Center for Clinical Neuroimmunology and Neuroscience Basel (RC2NB), and an emeritus Professor of Neurology at the University Hospital and University of Basel. He grew up in Athens, Greece, and obtained his MD and a Master's Diploma in Clinical Psychology from the University of Würzburg, Germany. He completed his specialization in Neurology at the University of Würzburg, where he also obtained the venia legendi in Neurology. From 1985 to 1989, he led the Clinical Division of the interdisciplinary Research Group for MS of the Max Planck Society.

In 1990, he was appointed Head of the Outpatient Clinic and deputy chief of Neurology at the University Hospital Basel, and from 2008 to 2020, he served as Chair of Neurology at the University of Basel. Since 2019, he has been the CEO of RC2NB. In 2023, he became a Senior Consultant for Neuroimmunology at the University Hospital Zurich.

Ludwig Kappos has been a lead investigator or steering committee member of pivotal phase 2 and 3 studies for most currently approved MS treatments and ongoing clinical trials with novel agents. His research includes clinical trial methodology, standardization of clinical assessments, and the development of digital, imaging, and biofluid-derived laboratory biomarkers to elucidate pathogenesis, define prognosis, and monitor therapy in neuroimmunological diseases.

Ludwig Kappos has received several awards, honorary doctorates, and memberships in scientific societies for his contributions. He has published over 820 peer-reviewed original papers, reviews, and book chapters.
