Marcus D'Souza, MD is the CEO of Neurostatus-UHB AG and a senior physician at the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Basel. He also conducts research at the Innovation Lab of the University Hospital Basel. Dr. D'Souza studied medicine in Cologne, New York City, and Bochum, completing the majority of his neurology training in Bochum and Basel.
For nearly 20 years, Dr. D'Souza has been dedicated to the standardization and improvement of clinical scales and measurement tools for quantifying disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological disorders. His research includes a collaborative project with Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, developing a Kinect-based motion-capturing device for quantitative analysis of disability in MS. Additionally, he has developed digital tools for capturing and documenting clinical symptoms in neuroimmunological disorders, notably the Neurostatus-eEDSS, which provides real-time feedback and expert review on entered values.
Dr. D'Souza also provides consulting services for the development of digital tools and has extensive experience in the verification and validation of digital systems, including IQs, OQs, and PQs. He is interested in implementing new strategies in Quality Management Systems (QMS) and supporting the validation of medical software. His research and clinical interests extend to Huntington Disease, focusing on the assessment of clinical and neuropsychological symptoms. Dr. D'Souza is particularly passionate about digital biomarkers and developing procedures for decentralized clinical trials (DCTs).
