RC2NB at the 12th DBE Research Day (2026)

What does it take to move scientific innovation beyond the laboratory and closer to patients?

That question was at the heart of the 12th DBE Research Day, held on 26 August 2026 at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. Bringing together researchers from across biomedical engineering and clinical research, the event focused on the connections that make translation possible across disciplines, technologies and perspectives.

Throughout the day, the programme moved from computational pathology and microbiome research to advanced imaging, intelligent optics and medical robotics, reflecting the breadth of biomedical engineering and its growing role in addressing real-world clinical challenges.
RC2NB was represented by Co-CEO Prof. Cristina Granziera, who joined Prof. Martin Styner for the tandem session “AI in Neurology: From Voxels to Patients.”

Their contribution brought a neurological perspective to the day’s wider conversation about translation: how can advances in imaging and artificial intelligence help us move from increasingly complex data towards knowledge that is meaningful for patients?

It is a question closely connected to RC2NB’s work at the intersection of neuroscience, neuroimaging, data and clinical research. Turning technological advances into better ways of understanding neurological disease requires more than one field of expertise. It requires researchers, clinicians and technology experts to work across traditional boundaries, exactly the kind of exchange the DBE Research Day was designed to foster.

As the DBE highlighted in introducing this year’s event, bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical solutions depends on collaboration, communication and the willingness to engage across different contexts.
